Sophia gets immersed

This past Wednesday we visited the Colegio San Antonio with our friend R to meet Sra. Sandino, the principal. She is a delightful person, extremely active in the community; she started the school 45 years ago. R sent her children there and highly recommended it.

The Senora did not speak English, but we communicated okay. She asked Sophia a series of questions, testing her Spanish. Sophia said “No sé” and “No entiendo” a lot, and felt uncomfortable being grilled, but she got through it okay. The principal told her she did very well, and gave her a Garfield stuffie as a “prize.” Garfield is one of Sophia’s favorite. She carried it home on the plane yesterday with her other stuffies (she and mom are back in town on a whirlwind tour). She is depositing all the stuffed animals at B and L’s, and returning to Granada with the next batch.  They must all have equal time so as not to arouse jealousy.

Anyway, I digress. Sophia was accepted into the school. We took a quick tour. The school is near Parque Central, about six blocks from our new house (which we’ll be moving into in two weeks). It has @30 children in 6th grade. Their school year ends in December. Sophia will be in the classroom with the current 6th graders until then, for language immersion. Then she’ll transfer to the new 6th grade crop when the new school year begins in January.

Sophia is very excited. She and mom went out and had her dress uniform made (by hand, as they are all done here). Check it out!
