Sophia finished her second week at school. Well, the second week was only four days long since Nicaraguans also observe All Saints Day and therefore no school was in session on Friday. What we have learned during these two weeks is that they have PE twice a week which requires the kids to come to school in their PE uniform, they wear regular uniform twice a week and on Fridays it’s free dress. We also learned that Sophia is in a classroom of 28 kids (herself included) but not all 28 show up all the time. And then there is the fact that there are kids in her classroom who seem to be in 4th grade. But then on Thursday those kids were out on the Plaza for PE while Sophia and the rest of the class were in the computer room. Could it be that they have 4th and 5th in one classroom? We will need to investigate that further. Starting in January she needs to be in the 6th grade classroom. That’s all I care about at this point.
Last week, a couple of neighborhood kids rang the door bell and wanted to talk to Sophia. She wasn’t in the mood to go play with them. So, they returned yesterday with some more friends and they all went out on their bikes. Luckily we had bought a bike for Sophia on Tuesday.
They went around the neighborhood for about 2 hours. Sophia came home all hot and dirty. They had gone to several of the kids’ houses to get water and to hold puppies. And at one house, the abuela had to use an alcohol swipe to disinfect Sophia’s scratch on her upper arm (an area of about 3”x3”) that she had sustained while falling into a hole. The bike didn’t get hurt, though. Thank goodness.Today one of the girls returned to pick up Sophia and we haven’t seen her since. It’s been a good two hours or so. We are very happy that she has made local friends.
